Welsh Castles

For those who don’t know about the Castles Relay – Keep reading

  • The Welsh Castles Relay Race will take place this year on June 4th and June 5th
  • Stage 1 starts on a Saturday morning at Caernarfon Castle in North Wales and stage 20 finishes Sunday afternoon  close to the castle at Cardiff, South Wales.
  • The 20 stages of the event covers more or less 208 miles with the individual stages varying between roughly 8miles to 13 miles the ‘average’ being 10mile.
  • 6 out of the 20 stages are Mountain stages and as they suggest these are a ‘tad’ more of a challenge than the rest – with  the first man and lady being crowned  Kings and Queens of the Mountain.
  • The race snakes its way through the Welsh Mountain countryside with  stage 10 finishing in Newtown Mid Wales early Saturday evening and stage 11 starting early on the Sunday morning.

In Newtown  there are showers and free accommodation to be had  (by way of space on the floor of the local sports hall) all you have to do is turn up with a pillow and a sleeping bag.   If that’s not for you, you can pitch up a tent in the grounds of the sports hall and still use the facilities,  and if that is still not for you there are plenty of B&B ‘s around.

A team mini bus will transport runners to Wales on the Saturday morning, it is then used to support runners all weekend and get you back home Sunday evening. (Runners will be asked to make a small financial contribution to the cost of the min bus) – There will also be a few fund raising events to follow  to assist with  funding  the weekend, so keep an eye out for that and please support where you can.

A team meal at a lovely local Italian restaurant is arranged for the Saturday night. (optional)

The weekend has a great atmosphere all weekend long as you get involved with the camaraderie and antics with the other teams (usually about 65 teams).

  •  The event entry fee is a significant non-refundable sum, the club pays this on our behalf, however we need 20 committed runners and 2/3 reserves before we could consider asking the committee to pay the entry fee for us
